Himansu Basu
Medical Director, Technical Advisor - Rotary Action Group for Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health

PDG Dr. Himansu Basu is a Senior Obstetrician /Gynaecologist (Retired) in the UK with expertise in Maternal & Child Health as a clinician, educator, researcher, innovator & global strategist. He is a member of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, served over three decades in executive roles at the Royal Society of Medicine (President, Obstetrics and Gynaecology section), Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (Lecturer, Council Member and Examiner), Royal College of Surgeons (Examiner) and the General Medical Council (Medical Assessor and Associate).

He did basic research on haemorrhages in pregnancy complications which led him to a PhD from the University of Liverpool. He received a number of awards for his research work from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the University of Liverpool, the Welcome Foundation and the British Medical Association. He published over 50 papers and chapters in books and was examiner for a number of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Examinations for over 30 years.

Himansu, a Rotarian for 42 years, served as District Governor (2004-05)- RI District 1120, in Leadership positions in Rotary GBI, GBI Chair of Rotary International Intercountry Contact Committee, Director WASRAG, Chairman of Rotarian Doctors Fellowship, Technical Advisor, Rotary Action Group of Reproductive Maternal Child Health, RI Global Networking & Services Committee, Rotary Foundation Cadre Coordinator in Maternal and Child Health and invited as a Rotarian partner of the WHO STAGE group in MCH.

He is Founder/Programme Director of CALMED – a Global Grant VTT based Rotary Foundation supported, innovative and holistic partnership programme (https://www.calmedrotary.org) - a recipient of several international awards including Service Above Self award, Rotary Champion of Change award and the Times Sternberg prize.

He is passionate about elimination of preventable maternal and new-born mortalities through structured training and upskilling of health professionals as well as community empowerment through health awareness programmes in underserved communities.
He is engaged in collaboration at global, technical/academic and regional/national levels through North/South solidarity and Technical Expert Networking Alliance (T.E.N.A.) in MCH based on “global thinking, local action” for improving health of women and children.
